Is Buying Furniture from Foshan, China Worth It?

If the thought of sourcing furniture from Foshan, China has crossed your mind, then you’ve probably also wondered whether it’s actually worth it. So today, I’m sharing my honest take based on real experience.

Short answer: Two types of buyers should seriously consider it. Everyone else can decide for themselves.

Type 1: You’re doing a whole project and care about quality

If you’re working on a villa or a large residential project — buying dozens of pieces of furniture at once — and you have certain quality standards, not just looking for anything —

Then sourcing from Foshan is a really good deal.

For the same quality, the difference in landed cost between buying locally and buying directly from Foshan factories is at least 40%. Not 10%, not 20% — at least 40%.

And “whole project” here doesn’t just mean furniture. It also includes doors, windows, flooring, and even custom cabinets. Foshan factories have the same advantages in these categories. A solid wood door, engineered flooring, a system window — the price difference between local purchase and direct sourcing from Foshan might be bigger than you think.

The savings don’t come from cutting corners on quality. They come from removing brand premiums, showroom rent, and layers of middlemen. Foshan is the original equipment manufacturing capital for much of the global furniture and building materials industry. Many of the “big brands” you buy locally likely come from the same production lines in Foshan.

So as long as you find the right factory, you can absolutely get the same quality — or even better — for significantly less money.

For a detailed breakdown of how to calculate landed cost, I’ve written a separate post on that. You can check the calculation method there.

Here’s the honest truth: The savings I’m talking about are conservative numbers. Because I only focus on high-quality products. In my supply chain, the priority is finding the right balance between quality and price — not chasing the lowest price. At the end of the day, delivery and installation rely on the product’s quality. Otherwise, the savings don’t mean much.

Type 2: You have customization needs

If you have your own design drawings, or you’ve found a style you like but can’t buy it locally — or the size, color, or material isn’t right — or you can find it but the price is just way too high —

Then sourcing from Foshan is also a very good option to consider.

I often ask my clients who come to Foshan: What made you decide to source from here?

Almost all of them give two reasons:

First, customization. Local customization is nearly impossible. And when it is possible, the price is ridiculous. Changing a size, swapping a color, adjusting a fabric — local workshops might add 50% or even double the price, and they’re often not willing to take small orders. In Foshan, these are standard requests.

Second, getting better quality for the same money. With the same budget, you might only get mid-tier quality locally. But in Foshan, you can get export-grade or even private-label products that big brands use. It’s not that things are cheap — it’s that the same money buys you a higher grade of product.

So locally, customization is either impossible or outrageously expensive. In Foshan, customization is the norm, and the pricing is reasonable.

Quick check: Are you a good fit for sourcing from Foshan?

After reading the two scenarios above, take a few seconds to think it over:

  • □ My project involves 20+ pieces of furniture or building materials
  • □ I have clear quality expectations, not just looking for anything
  • □ I’m willing to spend a little time on research, or I have someone to help me (like my role)
  • □ I have customization needs (size, color, material, drawings)

If you checked one or more → Sourcing from Foshan is worth serious consideration.

If you checked none → Buying locally is probably the easier choice.

One thing to be clear about

Sourcing from Foshan can save you money — but it’s not an “add to cart and wait” kind of process.

You need someone to communicate with suppliers, confirm details, and inspect the goods before shipment. If you can’t do these things, the money you save might end up being spent on rework and disputes.

To put it simply: This path works — but you need to walk it the right way.

That’s exactly where I come in.

I’ve written a detailed post on how I help villa owners source custom furniture from China. You can check it out here: How I Help Villa Owners Source Custom Furniture from China?

In short, I act as your eyes and ears on the ground — from finding the right factory, to confirming every detail, to inspecting the goods before they ship. So you get the savings without the headaches.

What about everyone else?

If you’re just buying one or two pieces, don’t want to spend time on communication, don’t have anyone to help with inspection, and just want to click and wait for delivery —

Then sourcing from Foshan might not be for you.

It’s not that you can’t get what you want. It’s that the hassle might not be worth it. Paying a bit more locally for peace of mind might be the smarter choice.

One-sentence summary

Whole-project buyers (furniture + doors + windows + flooring, etc.) who care about quality → Worth serious consideration. Save at least 40% on landed cost.

Buyers with customization needs (your drawings or favorite styles) → Also worth serious consideration. Save multiple times compared to local options.

Other situations → You decide for yourself.
