Before planning a Foshan furniture sourcing trip , ask yourself:
“Is sourcing from Foshan actually suitable for my project?”
Not every project benefits from sourcing in China. Budget, timeline, shipping, installation, and product type all matter. Sometimes, local sourcing may actually be more practical.
I’ve previously written about situations where sourcing from Foshan may not be suitable. You can read it here:

Toggle2 Situations Not Recommend Travel to shop furniture in China
If you’ve decided that Foshan is right for your project, this guide will help you prepare efficiently, avoid unnecessary stress, and maximize your sourcing trip.
Why Foshan?
Foshan is one of the largest furniture and building materials sourcing hubs in China.
Here you can source almost everything for a project in one city:
- Furniture
- Custom cabinets
- Lighting
- Doors & windows
- Tiles & marble
- Bathroom products
- Outdoor furniture
- Decorative materials
- Kitchens
- Hardware
- Custom metal works
This is why many villa owners, designers, Airbnb investors, café owners, restaurant projects, and hotels come here for sourcing.
The biggest advantage is being able to consolidate everything together instead of purchasing from multiple countries and suppliers separately.
But to do that efficiently, preparation is extremely important.
Visa Preparation — Please Don’t Ignore This
Before booking flights, first check your visa requirements carefully.
Some countries qualify for China’s transit visa exemption policy, which can be very convenient for short sourcing trips.
But please do NOT assume everything will be smooth automatically.
I once had a client who spent HOURS dealing with customs issues when entering China simply because of visa-related problems.
It seriously affected the trip experience.
My advice is:
always confirm directly with your local Chinese embassy or consulate BEFORE traveling.
Do not leave this until the last minute.
Prepare Your Payment Tools Before Coming to China
This is something many first-time buyers underestimate.
In China, especially when dealing directly with factories, credit cards are usually NOT accepted.
Most payments are done through:
- Bank transfer
- WeChat Pay
- Alipay
Before coming, I strongly recommend: - Downloading WeChat (How to use WeChat Pay as a foreigner? (Full setup guide)
- Downloading Alipay (How to use Alipay as a foreigner (Both in & outside China)
- Linking your international bank card
- Testing your payment function if possible
Even daily life in China depends heavily on mobile payment:
- Restaurants
- Coffee shops
- Convenience stores
- Taxis
Almost everything uses QR payment nowadays.
I also recommend preparing a small amount of cash for emergencies.
If you arrive without payment tools ready, you may waste a lot of time during your first few days trying to figure things out.
VPN Setup Reminder
A quick heads-up: please make sure to install and test a VPN before arriving in China. Once you’re here, it may be difficult to download or set one up. This will ensure you can still use Google, Gmail, and other services smoothly during your trip !
Prepare Moodboards and Measurements( very important)
Foshan offers overwhelming options, so preparation is key.
Before you come, create:
- Pinterest inspiration boards
- Furniture and material reference photos
- Color and texture palettes
- Cabinet and lighting references
Prepare room-by-room moodboards:
- Living room
- Dining room
- Bedrooms
- Outdoor spaces
- Café, Airbnb, or commercial projects
Also, prepare accurate measurements:
- Floor plans
- Ceiling heights
- Door widths
- Appliance sizes
- Furniture dimensions
For custom products, precise dimensions are crucial — factories cannot provide accurate quotes without them.
Save Reference Photos and size for Custom Products
For any custom furniture or cabinets, gather detailed reference images:
- Wood finishes
- Metal finishes
- Fabrics or upholstery
- Stone or marble
- Handles and accessories
- Lighting shapes
Because some factories offer custom manufacturing based on provided images or drawings
Plan Your Sourcing Schedule
Foshan sourcing is physically exhausting. A typical villa project takes 3–6 days, depending on scope.
Recommended approach:
- Day 1–2: Explore markets, note styles, check quality, understand pricing.
- Day 2–3 onward: Narrow down category by category — sofas, dining tables, cabinets, lighting, outdoor furniture.
This avoids decision fatigue and ensures you make informed choices instead of buying impulsively.
Work With a Professional Local Coordinator
Many overseas buyers underestimate this and try to handle everything themselves. In reality, sourcing involves:
- Factory communication
- Translation
- Price comparisons
- Production follow-up
- Quality inspection
- Logistics coordination
- Shipment consolidation
A professional local coordinator like me can:
- Plan your schedule efficiently
- Match you with the right factories
- Avoid unreliable suppliers
- Follow up production details
- Arrange inspection and shipment
- Organize airport pickup
The coordinator must be:
- Professional
- Responsible
- Reliable
- Experienced
Without a good coordinator, your sourcing trip can become overwhelming very quickly.
Flights and Arrival
Two main ways to reach Foshan:
- Fly directly to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport — easiest and most convenient.
- Fly to Hong Kong International Airport, then take the high-speed train to Foshan — sometimes cheaper depending on your location.
Hotel Recommendations
Choosing the right hotel matters more than many people expect because sourcing days are long and tiring.
Louvre Hotel (Foshan Lecong)
A 5-star hotel located in the center of the furniture market area.
Good for:
- Buyers Looking for a more upscale stay experience.
- A big family check in
You can easily access many furniture buildings nearby.
Courtyard by Marriott (Foshan Longjiang)
A more practical and comfortable option.
Good for:
- Couples
- Solo buyers
- Medium-budget trips
It’s close to shopping malls, restaurants, and daily conveniences.
There are many other hotel options depending on your budget and sourcing area.
Ordering & Payment Process
For custom orders:
- Confirm materials, dimensions, finishes, and accessories
- Sign contract
- Pay deposit
- Factory starts production
- Inspect goods
- Pay balance
- Arrange shipping
Follow these steps — skipping any can risk mistakes or delays.
Production & Shipping Timeline
This part is VERY important for project planning.
Production usually takes:
35–55 days after confirmation and payment.
Shipping time depends on destination country:
usually another 35–60 days.
And honestly:
shipping delays happen sometimes.
So ALWAYS leave extra buffer time.
Do not plan your renovation or opening schedule too tightly.
Installation Expectations
Many overseas buyers misunderstand this part.
Custom cabinets from China are usually designed for professional installers.
Factories normally:
- Label components
- Provide basic drawings
But they usually do NOT provide extremely detailed IKEA-style installation manuals.
Why?
Because professional installers already understand standard cabinet systems.
If you plan to install everything yourself, I strongly recommend watching installation videos beforehand:
- Cabinet installation
- Drawer installation
- Hinges
- Door alignment
This will reduce a lot of stress later.
For loose furniture, installation is usually very simple and not something to worry too much about.
Shipping Options — Port Delivery vs Door-to-Door
Generally there are two options:
Port Delivery
Goods are shipped to your local port.
You will need:
- Local customs clearance agent
- Local trucking
- Import handling
Door-to-Door Delivery
Your China-side sourcing partner handles:
- Export process
- Shipment arrangement
- Customs coordination
- Delivery scheduling
Many overseas buyers prefer this option because it is much easier and less stressful.
Final Thoughts
A sourcing trip to Foshan can be extremely exciting.
But without preparation, it can also become overwhelming very quickly.
The buyers who usually have the smoothest experience are the ones who prepare BEFORE arriving:
- Moodboards
- Measurements
- Budgets
- Timelines
- Product priorities
- Shipping expectations
The more organized you are before coming, the smoother your sourcing experience will be once you arrive in China.
And most importantly:
work with people you trust.
Because after you leave China, your project still depends heavily on the local team helping manage:
- Production
- Inspections
- Consolidation
- Logistics
- Shipment coordination
And honestly — that part is just as important as choosing the furniture itself.
